This book is “The Summer of the Swans”. The story is about a girl’s fourteenth summer, and her name is Sara. Sara has a younger brother Charlie, an elder sister Wanda, and their mother has passed away since they were little. Their father left them to work after their mother has died, so they were brought up by their Aunt Willie.
Wanda is beautiful and has a boyfriend called Frank. That makes Sara unconfident. She thinks she is not pretty, not cute, not good at anything, and she even thinks appearance is the most important thing about a person. One day, Wanda asked Aunt Willie to allow her to go to a lake to see swans with Frank, and Aunt Willie rejected because she thought riding motorcycle is dangerous. That made Wanda angry because she had been nineteen! Aunt Willie is bossy and seldom cares about what Wanda and Sara think, so they do not like her. In order to convince her to permit them go out, Frank urged Aunt Willie to let him ride her on his motorcycle for a while to prove that it is not dangerous at all. At first she did not agree, but finally she gave in, and allow them to go out.
After Wanda and Frank had left, Aunt Willie asked Sara to take Charlie to the lake. Charlie is different from other children. He has mental handicap and can’t talk, but he can understand what other people say. When they arrived at the lake, they were touched by those graceful swans. They had watched swans moving and fed them with some bread for a long time, but when Sara was ready to go home, Charlie did not want to go with her.
One night, Charlie took the image outside the window for swans, so he got up and went out to see them. Because he failed to find any of them, he went to the lake on his own. When he got there, he couldn’t see the lake because of darkness, but he did not understand. He kept walking around the forest and was frightened by barking dog, stung by plant, cut by fence and eventually fell into a ravine. He was so scared and tired, but he was not able to find the way home. Next morning, Sara couldn’t find Charlie everywhere around their house. Aunt Willie called police and informed Sara’s father of this bad news at once, and Sara went to the hill to look for Charlie with her two friends. They were discouraged in the beginning, but after their hard-working, Sara found Charlie in the ravine. Except some little hurt, Charlie was fine, and everyone was so glad. After they got home, Sara’s father called them to check whether Charlie was found. When he learned the good news, he promised to go back to see them on weekend. That is the story’s happy ending.
I also have an elder sister. Although she is not beautiful and does not have boyfriend, she is better than me in many aspect, such as doing housework, dealing with problems, taking care of others or making friend. Sometimes I have the same feeling with Sara, but now I believe everyone is special and helpful, we do not have to compare ourselves with another person, especially appearance, that is pointless. And we may have some quarrel with our family from time to time or even want to leave home. I know getting along with family is not always easy, but when you calm down, you can think about what your family do for you, maybe you will find that they play the important roles in your life.
